Consider These Points When Choosing a Grow Tent
Grow tents provide your plants with ideal growing temperatures and humidity levels year round free of Mother Nature’s unpredictable moods, pests, and diseases. With these perfect growing conditions, plants can grow more quickly and may produce more flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
What Size Grow Tent Do I Need?
Four factors determine the size of your grow tent:
  • The height of your plants
  • The number of plants
  • Your available space
  • Your budget
To allow room for the grow lights above the plants, grow tents should be 1' taller than the mature height of your plants. Small tents for herbs, salad greens, and small flowering plants stand about 4' tall. Mid-size tents for larger vegetables and decorative plants stand 5' to 6' tall. Large tents stand over 6' tall. Some tents include extension rods that add 1' to 2' to the height of your tent as your plants grow.
Determining the Price of a Grow Tent
Tent kits come with all of the equipment you need. Small tents require fewer pieces of operating equipment, but the larger the tent, the more operating equipment it requires. Consequently, small tents are relatively inexpensive while medium and large tents are more expensive.
Determining the Number of Plants to Grow
The number of plants you can grow depends on the number of grow lights recommended for your tent. In general, your tent will support two large or four small plants per grow light.
Determining the Space for a Grow Tent
Indoor tents can be square or rectangular. Small tents can fit in a closet, but make sure you can reach all of your plants easily when the tent is open. Mid-size and large tents are not only taller but also take up more floor space. They provide room for you to walk around your plants as you tend them.
The Basics Your Tent Should Have
Your tent should have:
  • A frame
  • The fabric tent
  • A floor tray
  • Sufficient vent ports for fans and slots for electrical connections for fans, grow lights, filters, and hydroponic equipment
The frame should be rust resistant, heavy-duty steel; powdered steel; or heavy stainless steel and be strong enough to support your lighting system. Avoid PVC frames that, if exposed to high temperatures, could release gases that could damage your plants.

The tent fabric should be a heavy, dark fabric such as canvas or Oxford cloth with a rating of at least 600 denier. Indoor grow tents can have a lower denier rating. If you plan on using your tent outdoors or taking it down or moving it frequently, choose fabrics with higher denier ratings. Avoid fabrics that contain PVC.

Look for double-stitched seams and heavy duty zipper openings for the door and observation window.

The tent should be lined with a reflective material such as Mylar.

You tent should include a floor tray for catching drips of water, leaves, soil or potting mix, and other debris making cleaning without disrupting the growing climate easier.
Other Equipment
Grow tent equipment should include:
  • Grow lights -- broad spectrum LED lights produce little heat and can be programmed to mimic the way natural light changes throughout the day
  • Fans maintain the growing climate by controlling the temperature and humidity
  • Carbon filters control odors
  • Humidity monitor
  • Straps, pockets, or similar storage space for gardening equipment and tools
